Kicking off the blog is the first book in the titular Secret, Book, & Scone Society mystery series, a personal favorite series of mine and one of the most engaging audiobooks to listen to. If you are a reader who loves mysteries, books about books, and strong female characters with traumatic pasts coming together to save their community, you are in for a wild ride.
In summary, Nora Pennington is a former librarian and current bookshop owner in the small town of Miracle Springs, a place known for all kinds of healing. While Nora has healed physical scars, her emotional ones resulting from a past accident have yet to do so. A chance encounter with a member of a visiting real estate development group who has regrets over something kicks off Nora’s journey for answers when he dies shortly after meeting him. Other townspeople impacted by the man’s demise include Hester, Estella, and June. While all four of these women do not have much in common on the surface, they all interacted with the man before his sudden demise. When the local sheriff refuses to investigate the four vow to find the truth behind the man’s suspicious death and form the Secret, Book, & Scone Society to do so. Unfortunately, things are more dangerous than they seem as someone or someone does not want the secrets surrounding the man’s death revealed and will do anything to make sure they stay as dead as him.
A common theme throughout the story is healing, appropriate for being set in a town whose major attractions consist of healing in all forms. All people within Miracle Springs have come to this town to find relief from their pain. The pain of the Secret, Book, & Scone Society members is on full display as sharing their secrets is what starts their healing process. Each of the women’s experiences shows how there are so many methods of providing comfort and healing. Sometimes their methods seem borderline supernatural. Nora knows exactly which books a customer needs to Hester mixing the right ingredients into the scones to bring the memory needed. While the book does a good job showing healing comes in all forms, some want the world to hurt like them. While the book takes great strides to show everyone is capable of being healed, it can only be done if you choose to.
Overall, The Secret, Book, & Scone Society is a good book and a better audiobook. It was hard to find something wrong with the story, so this series is off to a good start. I hope fellow readers think the same and give this book a try.
